Is your commercial business ADA compliant?

Construction of buildings that are readily accessible for all individuals is a must. Not only is meeting the standards of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA) the law, but it is critical that everyone has access to enter or exit a building for their safety. Furthermore, in today’s world of inclusivity and open dialogue of acceptance of all, it is important for businesses and companies to show understanding and empathy for all individuals.

The ADA requires all new construction of places of public accommodation, as well as commercial facilities, such as office buildings, to be accessible. Elevators are generally not required in facilities under three stories or with fewer than 3,000 square feet per floor unless the building is a shopping center or mall, the professional office of a healthcare provider, a public transit station, or an airport passenger terminal.

To that end, I’m proud of my team at Quantum Building Services for always incorporating their knowledge of ADA laws into each design and project. The Department of Justice’s revised regulations for Titles II and III of the ADA was published in the Federal Register on September 15, 2010. These regulations adopted revised, enforceable accessibility standards called the 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design, or simply "2010 Standards."

On March 15, 2012, compliance with the 2010 Standards was required for new construction and alterations under Titles II and III. The standards set minimum requirements – both scoping and technical -- for newly designed and constructed or altered public accommodations and commercial facilities to be readily accessible to and usable by individuals with disabilities.

At Quantum Building Services, our team is up to date with the very latest in ADA compliance and standards. We make sure our knowledge of the law is shared with each of our clients—along with best practices on options that even exceed the minimum standards.

Whether you hire us or another General Contractor, make sure to protect yourself from ADA lawsuits and liabilities. Do your research when looking for a General Contractor who has an experienced team that knows how to keep your company and your future project in compliance, so that all inspections meet—or even exceed--the standards set forth. It’s not only the law, but it’s the right thing to do.
